- In the scene where Scott is chasing after
the toy santa in the sleigh. Their arguing
and the toy santa says "You are a sad,
strange little man". Is that possibly
a reference to Toy
Story where he says the same thing to
Woody? - kim
- Yes, it is. The
Internet Movie Database confirms it.
- I have read remarks about the German "Tiger-tanks"
in the later part of the movie. The reason
that they differ from the real Tigers is that
there are no serviceable Tiger-tanks left,
and the filmmakers couldn't afford to build
new ones from "scratch". The tanks
in "Private Ryan" are very nicely
disguised Russian T-34:s of World War 2 design.
Just as the ones in "Kelly's Heroes"
with Clint Eastwood, and in some other movies.
- Olav Westerman
- Correction:
This concerns the comment about the Tiger
1 Tanks being modified Russian T-34s.
In fact they weren't; the movies Tigers
were built by Porsche, since they still
have the original blueprints. So the Tigers
were as close to authentic as one could
get. The most noticeable difference were
the movie Tigers lack of interleaved roadwheels,
like on the actual tank. I don't know
why they didn't use them; perhaps it was
due to the complexity and questionable
reliability of such an arrangement. -
thatjerryguy
- Correction:
Another comment about the Tigertanks
in the movie: Even if Porsche built
the tanks from scratch and not just
stripped and rebuilt T-34:s, I'm pretty
sure that they used T-34 wheels and
tracks, probably the whole propulsion-unit,
as it looks exactly as the T-34 unit.
Including the size, number and internal
distances of the wheels. By the way:
The Tigers in "Kellys Heroes"
looked just as convincing, with every
detail faithfully reproduced, but the
wheels and overall proportions, including
that the turret was placed too near
the front end, gave them away as T-34:s.
- Olav Westerman
- Correction:
One more comment about the Tigertanks.
According to, as I understand, reliable
sources I have found, the Tigers were
built around Russian T34/85 tanks. The
work was done by Plus Film Services
in England under the direction of art
director Alan Tomkins. The tanks, one
of them damaged, are now at the National
Tank Museum at Bovington, England. Furthermore,
I myself have checked my video-copy
of the movie thoroughly, and there is
absolutely no doubt that the tracks
and wheels are T-34 units, and that
the upper hull and turret does not have
the exact proportions of the real Tiger,
but can very well accommodate a T-34
inside. - Olav Westerman
- Director Steven Spielberg put the actors
in a boot camp for six days on that seventh
day they were all ready to quit the movie
altogether. - Ash
- Addition:
The boot was run by Marine Capt.(Ret)
Dale Dye, whose been the military tech
advisor on far too many films to mention
(he's also in the movie as a Colonel in
the scene where General Marshall learns
about the Ryan brothers and reads President
Lincoln's letter). The squad got dragged
through the mud in a cross between MARINE
Recuit training and WWII Army boot (for
a little more historical authenticity).

that the other actors would feel hostile
and it would reflect on screen. - Becka
