  • Hitler signs his name with the wrong hand when he autographs the diary, and actually spells his own name incorrectly.
  • Trying to find his father, Indy goes through his father's mail, revealing a stamp which wouldn't have been issued at that time.
  • When Indy and his father escape from the castle they are chased by German soldiers on what are quite clearly very modern trials bikes which have been very badly disguised. - Brenda Kennedy
  • The Tank that fell off the cliff, shows the turret breaking off with impact. The next scene shows it landing with the turret intact.- pat
  • When Indy is looking down at the big X, the books behind him are clearly fake. - Road Dogg
  • When the one of the bad guy's (wont say who) dies by getting driven off the cliff at the end, his dummy holds on to the cockpit of the tank after it got slammed into the ground! - Road Dogg
  • In a lovely rendering, Indiana and his father escape in an airship. This airship looks very much like the Hindenburg which exploded the year before. It is not the Hindenburg, but in fact the Graf Zeppelin II, her twin, which was ready for commercial operation in 1938. However, the the dirigible never carried a paying customer and was instead used for reconnaissance of the English border just before the war. Still, if I can buy that the Cup Christ Bled In is not fiction, I can buy that Hitler let the airships fly one more year. - Pertinax
  • In the opening of this movie, Indiana Jones is trying to get a golden cross, which is a jewel. In the boat, he fights with other guys. At one point, he has a hurt on one side of his mouth. He goes on his fight and a guy hits his face. Then, all of a sudden, the injury in his mouth changes to the other side. Is this a first-aid-punch? - Olavo SC
  • When Indiana Jones standing on the second floor of the library in Venice looking down at the "X" on the floor, the bookshelf behind him is obviously fake. - Admiral John
  • When the tank crashes it splits in two. If you look closely, you will see that there is no entrance in the main body of the tank from the top of the tank. There would be no way for anyone to actually get in the tank if it was made like this. This tank was obviously a model that snapped together like a toy. - David
  • When the Turk is beheaded by a booby-trap in the Grail's temple, his head tumbles across the floor and comes to a stop, without any blood being spilt from it. - Mr. X
  • When Indy and his father crash the car after the bomb was dropped, the Mudguards are black. When they hop out the car they are white. - Nicko
  • When Indiana makes the mistake of stepping on the J instead of the i for the word Jehovah, he saves his life after falling thru the floor by grabbing onto tiles that are clearly not the letters in that word. If that was the case, the tiles he grabbed to prevent plunging to his death should have fallen as well. - NeedaLife
  • (Spoiler) When Elsa is reaching for the grail while holding onto Indy at the end, the glove on her right hand slips off from Indy's grasp. Three shots are shown of the slipping glove. The first shot, (right after the close-up of her left gloved hand almost touching the grail.) shows the glove slipping off to the start of her fingers pretty fast. Then in the next shot, (right after she says "I can reach it, I can reach it.") The glove is back up at the palm and slips really slow. In the final shot, (after she wiggles her fingers) the glove slips off very fast and Elsa falls. How can a glove magically reappear at a point after it has slipped past that point? And why in one shot does it nearly slip off, then in then next shot it doesn't slip much? - Jeff
  • Also when Elsa's is trying to reach the grail at the end of the movie, we see that she is reaching with her left hand and holding onto Indy with the right. The glove on her right hand slips off and Elsa falls. Right after the glove slips off, it shows Elsa falling and Indy trying to grab her hand. The hand she reaches out to Indy is her right hand, but it is gloved!! The glove that slipped off before was on her right hand! So the hand should have been uncovered but it wasn't. This all happens on before you see Elsa flailing her boots and disappearing into the abyss. - Jeff
  • (Revealing mistakes) Indiana is on the tank near the middle-end of the movie, he is first hanging there, and the strap that later gets caught is not visible. Then, he tried to drop off, and it becomes hooked, even though to do so, he would need to be near the end of the gun (which he isn't) and he would also need to get over the shards of the gun that were blown off. Also, when he gets back up on the tank, you don't see him unhook then strap from the gun. (TV) - Kayin
  • (Revealing mistakes) At the tank scene when Indiana Jones is getting beat up, the crazy guy inside the tank gets shot in the head and falls on one of the levers, making the tank turn right. But as soon as the tank near misses the cliff wall, the tank straightens out. How could that have happened if Marcus and Mr. Jones Sr. were getting on top of the tank, and the driver was dead, so there was no one to straighten out the tank. (TV) - Kayin
  • (Factual errors) Indiana and Elsa are traveling through the catacombs with a torch fabricated with a bone and a piece of cloth dipped in the petroleum they are wading in. Throughout the scene, bits of fire lit cloth are seen falling off the torch and into the petroleum with no combustion. What I don't get is the following: 1. Why does the petroleum light for the guy who drops the match? 2. How can Indy swim through the petroleum with open eyes like he's swimming in a pool? - Grendel1120

Debated Goofs

  • Michael Sheard plays Adolf Hitler for a short while in the movie. When you read the credits Michael Sheard isn't listed as playing Hitler, but there are people like plane ace and Young Henry Jones who aren't in the film. Also it credits people like flower girl who don't have a bigger part then Michael Sheard. - Laurance
    • Correction: I'm not positive, but Young Henry Jones is probably referring to Indiana at the beginning of the movie played by River Phoenix. I don't have the movie, or I'd check for sure. - daner21
      • Correction: I'm afraid you're wrong, daner21. The scenes including Young Henry Jones (Indy's father - played by Alex Hyde-White) are deleted from the movie. Reason: unknown. I wonder why his credits remains. I don't know why Sheard is uncredited. He has also portrayed Hitler in a few other movies.
        • Comment: My guess is that he did not wish to be credited for playing one of the most sinister characters from history. - Vicky

Commented Goofs

  • To spell the "word of God" correctly, Indy starts by stepping on a stone marked with the letter "J", first letter of the word "Jehova". He then realizes he should have stepped on an "I", since in Latin alphabet, "Jehova" starts with an "I". The reason is that before the XVIth (16th) century, the letter "J" DID NOT exist. Therefore, there should have never been a stone marked with the letter "J" in the first place. Since the "builders" of the temple, whomever they were, set the correct path to be "Iehova" (starting with an "I"), they must not have known about the upcoming letter "J", centuries later (the temple must have been constructed before or during the middle ages, since it existed when the knights arrived - the temple is mentioned on the stone and the shield). - Yann Ropers
    • Comment: Well said. You are either a history student or a Latin Student (like I am). Most of the people I know don't understand why "Jehova(h)" starts with "I" in Latin. Like you said, there was no "J" back in those days. How I learned it was just that there was strictly no "J" in Latin, period. - Cren
  • When Indy's father shoots the fin on the back of the plane, the close up shows the back very damaged, then when the camera angle changes, it is hardly damaged at all (there are only a few fake holes and mild burn marks) - David
    • Comment: Regarding Jones Senior's and Indiana's escape from the airship in the small plane: The reason why the planes fin is not totally shot up in the long shots is obvious: The close ups with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in the plane is filmed in a studio. In the long shots the plane flies for real, and it wouldn't be very wise to fly around with a damaged rudder. Another goof in that scene: The German fighters are not German Fighters, but Swiss Pilatus trainers of post-war design, and as far as I understand there is only one real Pilatus that doubles for both fighters with the help of a little Hollywood-Magic. Anyhow, the idea that a passenger-carrying airship should carry an armed fighterplane (or, as is the case: an armed Belgian Stampe-trainer) is of course totally ridiculous, but as we all know, these movies are just wonderful fairy-tales. - Olav Westerman
      • Comment: Yeah, I know, the thing that bothered me in the scene, was the fact that in the studio they didn't re-film the back fin getting shot so it would even remotely resemble the damage in the long aerial shots. - David
      • Comment: The idea of an airship having an attached fighter plane was ludicrous. This concept was actually tested by the German, American, and British Air forces in the 20s and 30s, with good results. - av8tor
      • Comment: I have never in my life seen a Belgian Stampe trainer with de-Havilland Tiger Moth wings and a Gypsy Major Engine in it. The plane that is released from the Airship is in fact a product from the de-Havilland factory. It is a known fact that during WWII airships did carry escape planes used for the pilot and co-pilot of the Airship in case of emergency. It was decreed by German Heirarchy that in case of emergency and if practicable the Pilot and Co were to use the escape craft as pilots were in dire need. And i'm not even going to start on the colour schemes and markings.. - FlyingDemon
  • When Indy gets the (blank) he pours water all over (blank2). In the next shot when (blank2) is holding the (blank) there is still water in it. - Joe
    • Comment: Near the end of the movie, Indy completely empties the (blank) of liquid and in the very next shot the (blank) appears half full. (VHS) - nickv

Corrected Goofs

  • Uh, like in this library in Venice, when they're looking for the "X". first when the camera is on the floor it's really hard to see it. But when Indy runs up the stairs it's a huge "X" in different colors. - Michel C. Decker
    • Correction: This is not true. It looks different because of the reflection on the floor. - David
